iPod Classic: When the iPod Classic was released in 2001 by Apple, it revolutionized the MP3 music player industry. It was the start of Apple’s journey to taking the world by storm with their desirable mobile personal electronics. The other MP3 players at the time had small internal memory and horrible software interfaces for managing your music. The iPod solved the problem of managing and playing hundreds of songs.
Windows XP: After 12 years, Microsoft ended support for Windows XP. When bugs plagued the release of Windows Vista, the successor to XP, it gave Vista a bad name in the consumer market. Many companies avoided upgrading to Vista and opted to wait until the release of the next OS. Windows XP still has 13.57% of the desktop operating system, while Vista only has 2.65%
MSN Messenger: The end of MSN Messenger finally came on October 31, 2014. The service died a slow death of 18 months as Microsoft continued to allow users in China only. The first announcement of the end of MSN Messenger in 2013 spawned many eulogies. Many users (including yours truly) have fond memories of talking to their friends and classmates while using dial-up internet.
Macworld Magazine: Did you know that Macworld Magazine was released at the same time as the first Mac? Steve Jobs and David Bunnell from IDG partnered to start a magazine about the Mac market. That means Steve Jobs was practicing content marketing 30 years ago! By giving people insightful ways of using Apple products, he empowered his users and made them into loyal fans. Macworld published its last issue in November 2014.
Nokia X: After only 5 months on the market, Microsoft has announced to discontinue the Nokia X family of devices in July 2014. Right now, Nokia X runs the Android OS. Microsoft plans to transform the Nokia X into Lumia smartphones running Windows. Microsoft acquired Nokia’s mobile business in 2013.
Orkut: Orkut was a social media network made by a Google employee, Orkut Büyükkökten. It was part of the 20 percent project, in which Google employees could spend 20 percent of their time on a project not related to their responsibilities. It was the most popular social networking site in Brazil back in 2010. Google is focusing on growing Google+ as their social media network.
Facebook Poke: After Facebook failed to acquire Snapchat in 2013, it created Facebook Poke, a competing app. Facebook Poke allowed you to send messages, photos and videos that was available for viewing for up to 10 seconds, after which it would self destruct. The app was not adopted by Facebook users.
Xbox Entertainment Studios: Xbox Entertainment Studios was a movie and television production studio. It was created in 2012 by Microsoft to produce interactive television content for Xbox One. As part of the massive layoff and restructuring in October 2014, Microsoft shut down the studio.
